HAECO, a leading global provider of nose-to-tail solutions for aircraft maintenance, has reinforced its commitment to sustainability by expanding its solar photovoltaic (PV) system at its base maintenance facility in Hong Kong. This upgrade now boasts the largest electricity output from a single site in the city, exceeding 4,000,000 kWh annually.
In 2022, HAECO Hong Kong installed one of the largest solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in Hong Kong across the rooftops of its Hangars 2 and 3 at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). To further leverage the expansive and unobstructed airport environment, HAECO Hong Kong has now added 2,200 additional solar panels on the rooftop of its Hangar 1 facility, which is equivalent to an annual electricity output of 1,300,000 kWh.
“The expansion of our solar PV system capacity is a vital component of our sustainable development strategy as we continue to deploy solar PV solutions across our global locations in Hong Kong, Xiamen and the US,” said Summit Chan, Group Director of Corporate Development at HAECO. “The power output of our solar PV system in Hong Kong now generates electricity equivalent to 14% of HAECO Hong Kong's annual electricity consumption at our three hangars.”
HAECO Hong Kong’s enhanced solar PV system represents a 40% increase from its original output in 2022. With more than 8,000 panels, the system generates more than 4,000,000 kWh of electricity annually, making it the largest solar PV system of its kind on a single site in Hong Kong.
The annual electricity generated from this expanded system is equivalent to the energy consumption of approximately 1,300 households1 and is comparable to the reduction of an annual 1,700 tonnes of carbon emissions or planting 72,000 trees2.
HAECO is committed to the HKIA 2050 Net Zero Carbon Pledge as it plans to progressively electrifies all of its commercial vehicles at HKIA by 2030, replaces all conventional lights with LED lights for around 27,000 pieces and install nano filters for over 100 units of Air Handling Units (AHU).
